Documentary Love
September 30th, 2008
Okay, the cat’s out of the bag. I’m making a documentary. About Old Reliable and David Hurles, the man who started it all–and by that, I mean basically the entire men-recorded-doing-stuff business.
Consequently, I’m watching a lot of documentaries; this is one of the best:

Love me some Old Reliable. From the gnarly couch to the swankier white digs. The basement, the balcony, the rooftop. There was always that suspense, were they going to rob him or jack off for him? Hurles cornered the market with baby oil.

Sweet!
I have the book they put out a couple years ago about Hurles/Old Reliable; it’s a good read with great, iconic pictures.
Is this a “Joe Gage” film or a “Tim Kincaid” film?
And, will you still be making narrative films while in production on this?

It’s a Joe Gage production. It’s gonna take some time, and I’ll continue shooting some other stuff as well.

Thrilling news, Joe. There’s nobody I trust more to understand the venerable place Old Reliable holds in gay masturbation history. I got my OR exposure primarily at the Circle J in SF. Hal Call, the owner, was inspired to make his own versions–he’d sidle up to guys in the theater and invite them “upstairs” where the scene was seedier than anything Hurles ever recorded. A week later, there they would be, up on the CJ screen . . .

Fantastic! Will this be a Titan production, or something you’re doing off on your own? I knew it would be something great…can’t wait!
