I wrote an article for Cerebro, an X-Men fanzine, back in my youth around 1980, likening being gay to being a mutant (being an outcast/regarded as a freak, being born with a gene that made me this way), and suggested that the character Northstar, who’d been introduced in a storyline about Wolverine’s origin, might be gay – my only basis being (a) the way John Byrne drew him and (b) a couple of images of said mutant playboy skier at liesure with cute men in the background, ie pure fantasy on my part lusting after 2-d images of cartoon men! Don’t know if I read intentional subliminal messages in those images, or whether it was wishful thinking on my part but it was spooky when he came out years later, and I’ve always wondered if I had a hand in that or if it was just coincidence. Either way, it was a good thing; my article prompted a number of letters to come my way, one from a younger teen who was verging on coming out and struggling with it – my parents helped him more than I did, but we’re still in touch today.
